Narrative:

We were put into position and hold on runway 21C in dtw and held there for about 5 mins while aircraft landed on runway 21L and departed on runway 21R. With the visibility at 1/2 mi, I thought it possible that an aircraft might break out lined up wrong and land on us. I thought I remembered reading that ATC was supposed to avoid holding an aircraft in position for takeoff for long periods.
