Narrative:

We checked in on new frequency with ZID. To the best of our recall, the controller acknowledged and gave us a new altimeter setting, that's all. 2-3 mins later, ATC said 'did you get your descent to 11000 ft?' we said 'negative we didn't receive any descent.' ATC paused 1 min (nothing said). (Us) 'did you have a descent for us.' (ATC) 'descend and maintain 11000 ft.' we acknowledged. 2 mins later turn right 15 degrees. No mention was made of any conflicts or problems by ATC. I believe the controller thought he gave us a descent but didn't. Neither pilot recalls receiving or reading back any descent clearance. We heard no further mention of the confusion from ATC. I've been flying for 13 yrs with no altdevs. I'm 98 percent sure we received no clearance, but we were both tired, so I have some doubt.

Original NASA ASRS Text

Title: NEITHER PLT RECALLS HEARING A CLRNC OR READING BACK A CLRNC TO 11000 FT. THE ARTCC NEVER SAID THEY DID CLR THE FLT TO 11000 FT. THE CTLR ONLY ASKED IF THEY WERE CLRED TO 11000 FT AND WHEN TOLD THEY WERE NOT, THE CTLR CLRED THE FLT TO 11000 FT AND TURNED THE FLT 15 DEGS R.

Narrative: WE CHKED IN ON NEW FREQ WITH ZID. TO THE BEST OF OUR RECALL, THE CTLR ACKNOWLEDGED AND GAVE US A NEW ALTIMETER SETTING, THAT'S ALL. 2-3 MINS LATER, ATC SAID 'DID YOU GET YOUR DSCNT TO 11000 FT?' WE SAID 'NEGATIVE WE DIDN'T RECEIVE ANY DSCNT.' ATC PAUSED 1 MIN (NOTHING SAID). (US) 'DID YOU HAVE A DSCNT FOR US.' (ATC) 'DSND AND MAINTAIN 11000 FT.' WE ACKNOWLEDGED. 2 MINS LATER TURN R 15 DEGS. NO MENTION WAS MADE OF ANY CONFLICTS OR PROBS BY ATC. I BELIEVE THE CTLR THOUGHT HE GAVE US A DSCNT BUT DIDN'T. NEITHER PLT RECALLS RECEIVING OR READING BACK ANY DSCNT CLRNC. WE HEARD NO FURTHER MENTION OF THE CONFUSION FROM ATC. I'VE BEEN FLYING FOR 13 YRS WITH NO ALTDEVS. I'M 98 PERCENT SURE WE RECEIVED NO CLRNC, BUT WE WERE BOTH TIRED, SO I HAVE SOME DOUBT.
