Narrative:

Location: north of aua airport. We were approaching aua with curacao at FL070. We requested a lower altitude. Curacao handed us off to beatrix approach. We checked in level at FL070 with a request for lower and advised aua in sight. We were cleared for the visual approach. When we were turning final, the tower 120.9 asked us our altitude. We advised 1500 ft. They told us we were only cleared to FL040. After we questioned this and advised them that we were cleared for the visual, they restated that we were only cleared to FL040 and then cleared us to land. They did not pursue anything further.
