Narrative:
I was departing VFR from clt to SOP. I obtained clearance and contacted ground. Ground cleared me to an intersection departure on runway 18L. (I taxied from a local FBO). I observed no traffic and taxied onto runway 18L and then contacted tower. The tower controller appropriately 'read me the riot act' about taxiing onto an active runway without tower clearance. I then was cleared for takeoff and departed uneventfully. No takeoffs or landing traffic was affected (luckily). I think 2 factors contributed to this: #1) I operated out of many uncontrolled fields lately and didn't mentally 'switch' to controled field (tower) procedures (habit). #2) less than 100 percent 'attention to detail.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF AN SMT TWIN FAILED TO OBTAIN TWR CLRNC BEFORE TAXIING ONTO RWY FOR TKOF.
Narrative: I WAS DEPARTING VFR FROM CLT TO SOP. I OBTAINED CLRNC AND CONTACTED GND. GND CLRED ME TO AN INTXN DEP ON RWY 18L. (I TAXIED FROM A LCL FBO). I OBSERVED NO TFC AND TAXIED ONTO RWY 18L AND THEN CONTACTED TWR. THE TWR CTLR APPROPRIATELY 'READ ME THE RIOT ACT' ABOUT TAXIING ONTO AN ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT TWR CLRNC. I THEN WAS CLRED FOR TKOF AND DEPARTED UNEVENTFULLY. NO TKOFS OR LNDG TFC WAS AFFECTED (LUCKILY). I THINK 2 FACTORS CONTRIBUTED TO THIS: #1) I OPERATED OUT OF MANY UNCTLED FIELDS LATELY AND DIDN'T MENTALLY 'SWITCH' TO CTLED FIELD (TWR) PROCS (HABIT). #2) LESS THAN 100 PERCENT 'ATTN TO DETAIL.'
