Narrative:

I called ground control approaching spot X with ATIS information (recorded at XX50Z or XX50 local). Ground control cleared us to join taxiway left to taxi to runway 31 at intersection L-7 for departure. I checked the takeoff charts and discovered that air carrier does not provide takeoff data for runway 31 from intersection L-7. I contacted ground control and informed the controller that we would need the full length of runway 31 for departure and the controller issued instructions to taxi to runway 31 and to hold short at the approach end. This clearance was acknowledged and taxi to runway 31 was commended. Turning onto taxiway left the right engine was started and the taxi checklist and delayed engine start checklist were completed. Upon finishing these items, I selected the bna tower frequency in the #1 communication radio. The tower controller told us to immediately turn onto the runway and to exit at the second left, that we had passed the hold short line. When this clearance was issued we were still well short of the end of the runway. The captain complied with this clearance and no conflict existed, though there was an aircraft on final approach to the runway. After clearing the runway I saw that there is, in fact, a hold line protecting the approach path. We had taxied past this point during the starting of the engine, the reading of the checklists and the frequency change. I was very busy during this period and never saw this part of the taxiway. The captain and I both assumed that after the discussion about the intersection takeoff versus full length and the clearance to use the full length that we were cleared to taxi all the way to the departure end of the runway. This was the first time I had ever departed on runway 31 at bna.

Title: FLC OF AN MLG FAILED TO HOLD SHORT OF THE ACTIVE RWY RESULTING IN TWR INTERVENTION AND AMENDED TAXI INSTRUCTIONS.

Narrative: I CALLED GND CTL APCHING SPOT X WITH ATIS INFO (RECORDED AT XX50Z OR XX50 LCL). GND CTL CLRED US TO JOIN TXWY L TO TAXI TO RWY 31 AT INTXN L-7 FOR DEP. I CHKED THE TKOF CHARTS AND DISCOVERED THAT ACR DOES NOT PROVIDE TKOF DATA FOR RWY 31 FROM INTXN L-7. I CONTACTED GND CTL AND INFORMED THE CTLR THAT WE WOULD NEED THE FULL LENGTH OF RWY 31 FOR DEP AND THE CTLR ISSUED INSTRUCTIONS TO TAXI TO RWY 31 AND TO HOLD SHORT AT THE APCH END. THIS CLRNC WAS ACKNOWLEDGED AND TAXI TO RWY 31 WAS COMMENDED. TURNING ONTO TXWY L THE R ENG WAS STARTED AND THE TAXI CHKLIST AND DELAYED ENG START CHKLIST WERE COMPLETED. UPON FINISHING THESE ITEMS, I SELECTED THE BNA TWR FREQ IN THE #1 COM RADIO. THE TWR CTLR TOLD US TO IMMEDIATELY TURN ONTO THE RWY AND TO EXIT AT THE SECOND L, THAT WE HAD PASSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. WHEN THIS CLRNC WAS ISSUED WE WERE STILL WELL SHORT OF THE END OF THE RWY. THE CAPT COMPLIED WITH THIS CLRNC AND NO CONFLICT EXISTED, THOUGH THERE WAS AN ACFT ON FINAL APCH TO THE RWY. AFTER CLRING THE RWY I SAW THAT THERE IS, IN FACT, A HOLD LINE PROTECTING THE APCH PATH. WE HAD TAXIED PAST THIS POINT DURING THE STARTING OF THE ENG, THE READING OF THE CHKLISTS AND THE FREQ CHANGE. I WAS VERY BUSY DURING THIS PERIOD AND NEVER SAW THIS PART OF THE TXWY. THE CAPT AND I BOTH ASSUMED THAT AFTER THE DISCUSSION ABOUT THE INTXN TKOF VERSUS FULL LENGTH AND THE CLRNC TO USE THE FULL LENGTH THAT WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI ALL THE WAY TO THE DEP END OF THE RWY. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD EVER DEPARTED ON RWY 31 AT BNA.
