Narrative:

Descending to FL240 and while passing FL290, ZTL advised us to make an immediate left turn to 020 degrees. About 5 seconds later, TCASII indicated a TA followed shortly by an RA to climb. The descent was stopped and we visually acquired the traffic at 3 O'clock 4-5 mi and 300 ft below us. The RA ceased and we were instructed by ZTL to proceed direct rmg and continue descent. TCASII does continue to be an accurate and valuable tool. Those programs in place in the ctrs obviously still need to be improved upon.
