With radar vectors to route filed, aircraft compass system became intermittent. While trying to correct flight path deviation and compass system malfunction and radio station changes, assigned altitude was missed and violated by approximately 850 ft. Crossing traffic was reported to be less than 1 mi, 10-12 O'clock, and level 5000 ft. An immediate descent was made when departure notified the reporter of the situation. Aircraft is in avionics repair at the time of the report.
