Narrative:

Flight was being vectored for a visual approach runway 24 rda. We were at 5000 ft still IMC. Approach gave us a descent to 4200 ft. We started the descent and got a GPWS warning 'terrain, terrain pull up.' we initiated a maximum power pull up and climbed to 5500 ft before the warning stopped. We advised approach of our evasive action. Approach stated that we were now well clear of any terrain and could descend to 3700 ft. We descended and broke out at about 4000 ft and completed the approach without further problems. There was moderate turbulence as we started the first descent, not sure if that was a factor or not.

Title: THE FLT WAS BEING VECTORED IN IMC CONDITIONS AT NIGHT FOR A VISUAL APCH. WHEN CLRED TO DSND TO 4200 FT THE DSCNT WAS STARTED AND THE GPWS WARNING 'TERRAIN' OCCURRED. THE PROCEDURAL MAX PWR PULL UP WAS ACCOMPLISHED TO 5500 FT BEFORE THE WARNING STOPPED. THE CTLR WAS ADVISED. THE CTLR TOLD THE FLT THEY WERE NOW WELL CLR OF THE TERRAIN AND COULD DSND TO 3700 FT. THERE WAS MODERATE TURB.
