At cruise (FL370) got 'left pack temperature' EICAS. Followed abnormal. Could not recover pack. Right pack would not hold cabin (approximately 300 FPM climb). Attempted manual control, no improvement. Started descent to FL240 at 4000+ FPM. Declared emergency and continued down to 10000 ft MSL with center's concurrence.
