Narrative:

I was practicing figure 8's on pylons in a rural area and reduced power to simulate an engine failure. I selected a long field oriented into the wind with a clump of trees at the near end and set up my approach. As I descended over the trees at about 300 ft AGL, I saw a house in the middle of them that I couldn't see before. I added power and expedited my departure from the area. Possible prevention: in the future I won't assume I can overfly a wooded area just because I can't see a structure.
