GPWS warning while on downwind runway 12 at sjc, IMC and at 5100 ft MSL. I was flying and pulled up about 500 ft till out of clouds. Approach control notified and responded with GPWS warning on downwind for runway 12 at sjc. IMC and at 5100 ft MSL. Pulled up about 500 ft till warning stopped and clear of clouds. Approach control notified and vectors continued for uneventful landing.

Title: AN ACR FLC GETS A GPWS TERRAIN WARNING WHILE ON DOWNWIND FOR RWY 12 AT SJC. THIS ARPT SITS IN A VALLEY WITH HIGH TERRAIN ON EACH SIDE. THE FLC WAS AT THE MVA AND PROPERLY EXECUTED THE ESCAPE MANEUVER.
