An air carrier MD80 flight crew responded to a GPWS terrain warning while on vector for localizer intercept. The flight crew climbed approximately 400 ft above their level altitude in compliance with the warning, and then continued to an uneventful landing.

Narrative:
When level at 3800 ft on approach to san runway 27 localizer intercept, GPWS sounded terrain about 4 times. We leveled off at about 4200 ft above our cleared altitude in order to comply with the GPWS. After that, made an uneventful landing. WX was VFR, but it being nighttime, we did not have a good look at the terrain.
