Narrative:

We taxied just short of the parallel taxiway and I got ahead by checking the magnetos, carburetor heat, and propeller as we waited for a B727 to taxi by. I wanted to be 'ready to go' as soon as we could taxi to the active. Ground control gave me a different taxi clearance than I'd received on my chkout flight, and of course, I'd broken another good old habit and had no airfield diagram on my kneeboard. I'd been cleared to taxi to runway 35R and to hold at the compass rose. I didn't see it and should have requested a progressive taxi right then and there. I asked the controller if he wanted me to taxi to taxiway B and hold as I had on my chkout flight and he said, 'no.' he probably had a fairly low opinion of me by now as I had called for initial taxi clearance saying I was at 'FBO X' instead of 'FBO Y.' he took time from his morning to make me feel like a complete idiot. I was also hoping to make a nice professional effort for my buddy and his wife to see and it wasn't going well. In mild desperation, I took the first available intersection to the left in hopes of getting out of the controller's hair a little sooner since it gave me a safe takeoff margin. I switched to tower frequency and tried to make contact with a '#1 for intersection takeoff' call when I saw another B727 on final and realized that the hold line on the intersection of inactive runway 09/27 put me too close to the runway for him to safely pass. I quickly switched back to ground and did a 180 degree turn while getting more hot words from the same controller. I apologized at length and cooled off a couple of minutes before a takeoff where the same guy reminded me to turn my mode C on after takeoff. The rest of the day was wonderful. My lesson: don't get in a hurry. Take time to do it right. Swallow all that air force jet jockey pride and ask for a progressive.

Title: PLT OF AN SMA SEL FAILED TO HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY DURING TAXI FOR TKOF.

Narrative: WE TAXIED JUST SHORT OF THE PARALLEL TXWY AND I GOT AHEAD BY CHKING THE MAGNETOS, CARB HEAT, AND PROP AS WE WAITED FOR A B727 TO TAXI BY. I WANTED TO BE 'READY TO GO' AS SOON AS WE COULD TAXI TO THE ACTIVE. GND CTL GAVE ME A DIFFERENT TAXI CLRNC THAN I'D RECEIVED ON MY CHKOUT FLT, AND OF COURSE, I'D BROKEN ANOTHER GOOD OLD HABIT AND HAD NO AIRFIELD DIAGRAM ON MY KNEEBOARD. I'D BEEN CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 35R AND TO HOLD AT THE COMPASS ROSE. I DIDN'T SEE IT AND SHOULD HAVE REQUESTED A PROGRESSIVE TAXI RIGHT THEN AND THERE. I ASKED THE CTLR IF HE WANTED ME TO TAXI TO TXWY B AND HOLD AS I HAD ON MY CHKOUT FLT AND HE SAID, 'NO.' HE PROBABLY HAD A FAIRLY LOW OPINION OF ME BY NOW AS I HAD CALLED FOR INITIAL TAXI CLRNC SAYING I WAS AT 'FBO X' INSTEAD OF 'FBO Y.' HE TOOK TIME FROM HIS MORNING TO MAKE ME FEEL LIKE A COMPLETE IDIOT. I WAS ALSO HOPING TO MAKE A NICE PROFESSIONAL EFFORT FOR MY BUDDY AND HIS WIFE TO SEE AND IT WASN'T GOING WELL. IN MILD DESPERATION, I TOOK THE FIRST AVAILABLE INTXN TO THE L IN HOPES OF GETTING OUT OF THE CTLR'S HAIR A LITTLE SOONER SINCE IT GAVE ME A SAFE TKOF MARGIN. I SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ AND TRIED TO MAKE CONTACT WITH A '#1 FOR INTXN TKOF' CALL WHEN I SAW ANOTHER B727 ON FINAL AND REALIZED THAT THE HOLD LINE ON THE INTXN OF INACTIVE RWY 09/27 PUT ME TOO CLOSE TO THE RWY FOR HIM TO SAFELY PASS. I QUICKLY SWITCHED BACK TO GND AND DID A 180 DEG TURN WHILE GETTING MORE HOT WORDS FROM THE SAME CTLR. I APOLOGIZED AT LENGTH AND COOLED OFF A COUPLE OF MINUTES BEFORE A TKOF WHERE THE SAME GUY REMINDED ME TO TURN MY MODE C ON AFTER TKOF. THE REST OF THE DAY WAS WONDERFUL. MY LESSON: DON'T GET IN A HURRY. TAKE TIME TO DO IT RIGHT. SWALLOW ALL THAT AIR FORCE JET JOCKEY PRIDE AND ASK FOR A PROGRESSIVE.
