Narrative:

The captain had established a relatively high rate of climb and then selected autoplt on with altitude select. We were cleared to 17000 ft and then told to contact ZNY on another frequency. The high rate of climb was continued through 16000 ft when I made the '1000 ft to go' call in conjunction with the altitude alerter. I pointed out the rate of climb, but the captain expressed confidence that the altitude select would capture the selected altitude. In addition I believe that the captain assumed we would be cleared to a higher altitude upon contact with center on the new frequency. The climb continued through the assigned 17000 ft at a reduced rate of climb, which I again pointed out. Again the captain assured me that the autoplt would capture. Meantime we were told to expect higher altitude in a certain period of time. At 17400 ft the airplane started downward to capture the selected altitude. Contributing factors: excessive rate of climb, captain's inaction as we climbed through 17000 ft, my own inaction in not insisting on a reduced climb rate.

Title: HIGH CLB RATE WHEN APCHING ASSIGNED ALT, CAPT DISREGARDED RPTR FO INPUT ABOUT RATE EXPECTING THE AUTOPLT TO CAPTURE, BUT ACFT OVERSHOT BY 400 FT BEFORE RETURNING TO ASSIGNED.

Narrative: THE CAPT HAD ESTABLISHED A RELATIVELY HIGH RATE OF CLB AND THEN SELECTED AUTOPLT ON WITH ALT SELECT. WE WERE CLRED TO 17000 FT AND THEN TOLD TO CONTACT ZNY ON ANOTHER FREQ. THE HIGH RATE OF CLB WAS CONTINUED THROUGH 16000 FT WHEN I MADE THE '1000 FT TO GO' CALL IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ALT ALERTER. I POINTED OUT THE RATE OF CLB, BUT THE CAPT EXPRESSED CONFIDENCE THAT THE ALT SELECT WOULD CAPTURE THE SELECTED ALT. IN ADDITION I BELIEVE THAT THE CAPT ASSUMED WE WOULD BE CLRED TO A HIGHER ALT UPON CONTACT WITH CTR ON THE NEW FREQ. THE CLB CONTINUED THROUGH THE ASSIGNED 17000 FT AT A REDUCED RATE OF CLB, WHICH I AGAIN POINTED OUT. AGAIN THE CAPT ASSURED ME THAT THE AUTOPLT WOULD CAPTURE. MEANTIME WE WERE TOLD TO EXPECT HIGHER ALT IN A CERTAIN PERIOD OF TIME. AT 17400 FT THE AIRPLANE STARTED DOWNWARD TO CAPTURE THE SELECTED ALT. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: EXCESSIVE RATE OF CLB, CAPT'S INACTION AS WE CLBED THROUGH 17000 FT, MY OWN INACTION IN NOT INSISTING ON A REDUCED CLB RATE.
