Narrative:

On initial contact with buffalo ground control, we were told to taxi to runway 23. Because there was no other traffic in the area and busy doing the before takeoff checklist, we all forgot that the taxi instructions did not clear us to cross the active runway. As a result, we inadvertently crossed runway 23 without clearance to do so. We were unaware of the infraction until ground control gave us a friendly reminder. Supplemental information from acn 324688: after crossing, the ground controller advised us that a clearance to runway 23 does not mean a clearance to cross the active runway during taxi. We obviously misunderstood the taxi instructions. We were certainly wrong, however, the ground controller might avoid a future problem such as ours by issuing a taxi instruction that includes a hold short of the active runway as a reminder. (I have heard this at some airports.) we will definitely be more vigilant!

Title: B727 FLC FAILS TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY WHEN CLRED TO TAXI TO THAT RWY.

Narrative: ON INITIAL CONTACT WITH BUFFALO GND CTL, WE WERE TOLD TO TAXI TO RWY 23. BECAUSE THERE WAS NO OTHER TFC IN THE AREA AND BUSY DOING THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST, WE ALL FORGOT THAT THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS DID NOT CLR US TO CROSS THE ACTIVE RWY. AS A RESULT, WE INADVERTENTLY CROSSED RWY 23 WITHOUT CLRNC TO DO SO. WE WERE UNAWARE OF THE INFRACTION UNTIL GND CTL GAVE US A FRIENDLY REMINDER. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 324688: AFTER XING, THE GND CTLR ADVISED US THAT A CLRNC TO RWY 23 DOES NOT MEAN A CLRNC TO CROSS THE ACTIVE RWY DURING TAXI. WE OBVIOUSLY MISUNDERSTOOD THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. WE WERE CERTAINLY WRONG, HOWEVER, THE GND CTLR MIGHT AVOID A FUTURE PROB SUCH AS OURS BY ISSUING A TAXI INSTRUCTION THAT INCLUDES A HOLD SHORT OF THE ACTIVE RWY AS A REMINDER. (I HAVE HEARD THIS AT SOME ARPTS.) WE WILL DEFINITELY BE MORE VIGILANT!
