Narrative:

On approach into dfw talking to regional approach control we were given a descent to 4000 ft. We read back 4000 ft and descended to that altitude. Shortly after we leveled off at 4000 ft the controller told us to maintain 5000 ft. We read back 5000 ft and climbed to 5000 ft. I never was sure whether or not we descended to 4000 ft in error or if the controller gave us 4000 ft in error or whether because of traffic we were given a climb back to 5000 ft.
