Narrative:

Clearance given: taxi to runway 8L via txwys north and A3 into position and hold, call when ready. Captain read back the clearance as given above. I listened to taxi clearance from controller, I listened to captain read back the clearance. It was read back exactly as given, so we proceeded as cleared. On the runway we called ready for takeoff and controller sounded surprised we were on the runway. Captain read the clearance as given earlier. The controller just said, something like, 'never the less, cleared for takeoff.' later we looked through the ATC procedures in the commercial pubs european charts and could not find phrases or procedures as we were given by the controller. Both of us, captain and first officer, listened carefully to taxi instructions and as the captain repeated them back correctly we proceeded as we understood.
