Narrative:

Understood clearance from clt approach to maintain visual separation from another aircraft on approach and follow with clearance to follow for visual approach to runway 36R. Started turn to west to follow traffic that was pointed out. Read back cleared to follow traffic (in sight). Part way into turn approximately 30 degrees (210 degree heading) controller called said we didn't have clearance to follow and turn back to 180 degrees and continue descent to 2300 ft. Saw more traffic on final (that we were supposed to follow, dash 8). He was further out and not at position initially called. Other aircraft was in that position. No close encounters!
