Narrative:

ZFW was in the process of issuing an IFR clearance for our flight into wichita, ks, from waco, tx. The initial segment was done under VFR. We requested to descend from 8500 ft to 6000 ft because of the winds aloft. The autoplt (s-tec) was new to me and I believed it to be programmed to intercept 6000 ft. The aircraft did not level off and the descent was arrested at 5700 ft. Further occurrences have been prevented by better equipment familiarization and by vigilance of altitude and autoplt function.
