Narrative:

First officer and myself were flying a flight from msp to las. Las approach control cleared us to slow to 220 KTS and to descend to 5000 ft. While descending through approximately 6400 ft, approach control asked us our altitude. We responded 'out of 6300 ft for 5000 ft. We were then told that we had been only cleared to descend to 8000 ft. Both first officer and myself clearly heard a clearance to 5000 ft. No conflict or loss of separation occurred. Terrain clearance was not a factor.
