Narrative:

On biennial flight check, after a yr's hiatus, I taxied from the south ramp in the wrong direction. No conflicts occurred. When the ground controller said 'runway 4 at delta' I misunderstood and turned left toward runway 4, which was closed at the approach end. The ground controller had me do a 180 degree turn and I followed delta to runway 4. Excitement over the VFR, recent ground school instruction, etc, caused me to revert to old habits, going the way we always went. A simple error that had no adverse consequences but it reminded me to be more attentive to the details of controller instructions.
