Narrative:

I was the PNF. We approached bna on the STAR from the southeast. The approach controller kept us high, tight with the runway (for our energy level) and at 250 KIAS. The controller vectored us across the bna runway 2L localizer inadvertently. Captain told me to query approach after we were going through localizer without an approach clearance. ATC did not respond until my 3RD call, then told us to turn right to intercept the runway 2L localizer, descend to 2500 ft until established on localizer and cleared for ILS runway 2L at bna. We were IMC at this time. I was looking outside for the runway and did not monitor the approach, although I should have -- captain descended on the GS. We broke out at 1500 ft AGL but did not see the runway. I was distraction by looking outside, and do not know if we were on THE7 localizer or not when we descended out of 2500 ft MSL. Tower controller advised us 'not on localizer, go around.' at this time, runway came into view almost dead ahead, about 3 to 4 mi away. I told tower 'runway in sight.' we were cleared to land and were in a safe position to do so. We landed safely. Factors, late turn on by ATC (inside of fafirst officerm), kept too high and too fast for approach by ATC. I did not monitor the instruments to xchk the captain, and VFR WX at field made us think we could land safely. Recommendation: do not give approach clearance if flight will intercept localizer inside of the fafirst officerm.

Title: ACR FLC FAILED TO INTERCEPT THE LOC BEFORE DSNDING ON THE GS OF AN ILS APCH. APCH CTLR INTERVENED.

Narrative: I WAS THE PNF. WE APCHED BNA ON THE STAR FROM THE SE. THE APCH CTLR KEPT US HIGH, TIGHT WITH THE RWY (FOR OUR ENERGY LEVEL) AND AT 250 KIAS. THE CTLR VECTORED US ACROSS THE BNA RWY 2L LOC INADVERTENTLY. CAPT TOLD ME TO QUERY APCH AFTER WE WERE GOING THROUGH LOC WITHOUT AN APCH CLRNC. ATC DID NOT RESPOND UNTIL MY 3RD CALL, THEN TOLD US TO TURN R TO INTERCEPT THE RWY 2L LOC, DSND TO 2500 FT UNTIL ESTABLISHED ON LOC AND CLRED FOR ILS RWY 2L AT BNA. WE WERE IMC AT THIS TIME. I WAS LOOKING OUTSIDE FOR THE RWY AND DID NOT MONITOR THE APCH, ALTHOUGH I SHOULD HAVE -- CAPT DSNDED ON THE GS. WE BROKE OUT AT 1500 FT AGL BUT DID NOT SEE THE RWY. I WAS DISTR BY LOOKING OUTSIDE, AND DO NOT KNOW IF WE WERE ON THE7 LOC OR NOT WHEN WE DSNDED OUT OF 2500 FT MSL. TWR CTLR ADVISED US 'NOT ON LOC, GAR.' AT THIS TIME, RWY CAME INTO VIEW ALMOST DEAD AHEAD, ABOUT 3 TO 4 MI AWAY. I TOLD TWR 'RWY IN SIGHT.' WE WERE CLRED TO LAND AND WERE IN A SAFE POS TO DO SO. WE LANDED SAFELY. FACTORS, LATE TURN ON BY ATC (INSIDE OF FAF/OM), KEPT TOO HIGH AND TOO FAST FOR APCH BY ATC. I DID NOT MONITOR THE INSTRUMENTS TO XCHK THE CAPT, AND VFR WX AT FIELD MADE US THINK WE COULD LAND SAFELY. RECOMMENDATION: DO NOT GIVE APCH CLRNC IF FLT WILL INTERCEPT LOC INSIDE OF THE FAF/OM.
