Narrative:

Inbound for portage airport the engine 'skipped a beat.' didn't run rough, it was as if the engine went silent for a second or two. 2 passenger didn't notice. Continued with approach and landing without problem. Fueled up while watching the windsock. Wind was 5 KTS at 150 degrees but moved to 90 degrees occasionally. Due to engine problem, I was hoping I could depart on runway 35, instead of runway 17. If I had to make an emergency landing, runway 17 would have been a climb out over the city whereas runway 35 was vacant land. I decided to avoid an emergency landing in the city of portage and risk tailwind takeoff to leave me vacant land for an emergency. At the time of takeoff the wind was out of the west and then shifted back to southwest. Takeoff was uneventful, no emergency landing required. Engine ran fine for the 1/2 hour flight home. Also ran fine the following day for a 2 1/2 hour flight.

Narrative: INBOUND FOR PORTAGE ARPT THE ENG 'SKIPPED A BEAT.' DIDN'T RUN ROUGH, IT WAS AS IF THE ENG WENT SILENT FOR A SECOND OR TWO. 2 PAX DIDN'T NOTICE. CONTINUED WITH APCH AND LNDG WITHOUT PROB. FUELED UP WHILE WATCHING THE WINDSOCK. WIND WAS 5 KTS AT 150 DEGS BUT MOVED TO 90 DEGS OCCASIONALLY. DUE TO ENG PROB, I WAS HOPING I COULD DEPART ON RWY 35, INSTEAD OF RWY 17. IF I HAD TO MAKE AN EMER LNDG, RWY 17 WOULD HAVE BEEN A CLBOUT OVER THE CITY WHEREAS RWY 35 WAS VACANT LAND. I DECIDED TO AVOID AN EMER LNDG IN THE CITY OF PORTAGE AND RISK TAILWIND TKOF TO LEAVE ME VACANT LAND FOR AN EMER. AT THE TIME OF TKOF THE WIND WAS OUT OF THE W AND THEN SHIFTED BACK TO SW. TKOF WAS UNEVENTFUL, NO EMER LNDG REQUIRED. ENG RAN FINE FOR THE 1/2 HR FLT HOME. ALSO RAN FINE THE FOLLOWING DAY FOR A 2 1/2 HR FLT.
