Narrative:

We were cleared into position on runway 1L at sfo and to hold. We completed takeoff checklist in position and awaited takeoff clearance. I commented on an aircraft landing on runway 28R and thought we might get takeoff clearance after he cleared the runway 1L intersection. After 2-3 mins in position, we realized we had not heard any tower clrncs. The first officer looked at his hand microphone and saw the cover of his flight bag was depressing the microphone button and covering the tower xmissions. We acknowledged causing the problem. Tower said 'no problem' and cleared us for takeoff. In hindsight, this could indeed have been a major problem if we were on a runway, used for both takeoff and landing. I highly recommend moving the captain's and first officer's hand mikes on all B767 aircraft to an area where the microphone button is not apt to be accidently depressed.

Title: FLC BAG KEYS HAND MIKE.

Narrative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
