Narrative:

I was the l-seat pilot in a fairchild sa-227 undergoing a 15 percent type rating check-ride with a designated examiner. The check-ride maneuvers were complete and we were returning to lambert field to finish the paperwork and drop off the designated examiner before returning to dallas/fort worth. The active runways were runways 30L, 30R, and 24. We had been cleared to land on runway 24 and, upon touchdown, continued the landing roll across runway 30R. The tower then instructed us to 'continue across runway 30L and turn left on.... At this point, I did not clearly hear/understand the tower's instructions. The designated examiner thought he heard the tower instruct us to turn left on runway 30L and told me to do so. Upon making the turn, I saw another aircraft in position and holding for takeoff. We immediately realized our mistake and turned off on the adjacent taxiway. At this point, ground control advised us of the mistake and requested that we contact the tower. On the telephone, the designated examiner acknowledged our error and explained that he was anticipating instructions to turn on the runway and mis-heard the actual instructions. I should have been more assertive in clearing up my ambiguity concerning the instructions by questioning the other pilot. Even though he is a designated examiner, he is not infallible, and that is why we have 2 crewmembers aboard. Supplemental information from acn 311803: when we had slowed to approximately 60 KTS, I started explaining to the pilot the taxi routing that I expected and would have liked to get back to FBO where we would do the paperwork and drop me off. FBO is on the opposite side of the airport from the terminal and the gate where the airline usually parks. While I was talking, tower was giving instructions on where to turn off the runway and the taxi routing. Because I was trying to talk and listen at the same time I heard what I wanted and expected to hear and not what the tower told us. At a critical phase of flight, I was talking when I should have been listening.

Title: AFTER LNDG, DURING A FLT EVALUATION, A COMMUTER CAPT TURNED ONTO AN ACTIVE RWY. THE CAPT WAS FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THE DESIGNATED EXAMINER IN THE R SEAT.

Narrative: I WAS THE L-SEAT PLT IN A FAIRCHILD SA-227 UNDERGOING A 15 PERCENT TYPE RATING CHK-RIDE WITH A DESIGNATED EXAMINER. THE CHK-RIDE MANEUVERS WERE COMPLETE AND WE WERE RETURNING TO LAMBERT FIELD TO FINISH THE PAPERWORK AND DROP OFF THE DESIGNATED EXAMINER BEFORE RETURNING TO DALLAS/FORT WORTH. THE ACTIVE RWYS WERE RWYS 30L, 30R, AND 24. WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 24 AND, UPON TOUCHDOWN, CONTINUED THE LNDG ROLL ACROSS RWY 30R. THE TWR THEN INSTRUCTED US TO 'CONTINUE ACROSS RWY 30L AND TURN L ON.... AT THIS POINT, I DID NOT CLRLY HEAR/UNDERSTAND THE TWR'S INSTRUCTIONS. THE DESIGNATED EXAMINER THOUGHT HE HEARD THE TWR INSTRUCT US TO TURN L ON RWY 30L AND TOLD ME TO DO SO. UPON MAKING THE TURN, I SAW ANOTHER ACFT IN POS AND HOLDING FOR TKOF. WE IMMEDIATELY REALIZED OUR MISTAKE AND TURNED OFF ON THE ADJACENT TXWY. AT THIS POINT, GND CTL ADVISED US OF THE MISTAKE AND REQUESTED THAT WE CONTACT THE TWR. ON THE TELEPHONE, THE DESIGNATED EXAMINER ACKNOWLEDGED OUR ERROR AND EXPLAINED THAT HE WAS ANTICIPATING INSTRUCTIONS TO TURN ON THE RWY AND MIS-HEARD THE ACTUAL INSTRUCTIONS. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE ASSERTIVE IN CLRING UP MY AMBIGUITY CONCERNING THE INSTRUCTIONS BY QUESTIONING THE OTHER PLT. EVEN THOUGH HE IS A DESIGNATED EXAMINER, HE IS NOT INFALLIBLE, AND THAT IS WHY WE HAVE 2 CREWMEMBERS ABOARD. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 311803: WHEN WE HAD SLOWED TO APPROX 60 KTS, I STARTED EXPLAINING TO THE PLT THE TAXI ROUTING THAT I EXPECTED AND WOULD HAVE LIKED TO GET BACK TO FBO WHERE WE WOULD DO THE PAPERWORK AND DROP ME OFF. FBO IS ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ARPT FROM THE TERMINAL AND THE GATE WHERE THE AIRLINE USUALLY PARKS. WHILE I WAS TALKING, TWR WAS GIVING INSTRUCTIONS ON WHERE TO TURN OFF THE RWY AND THE TAXI ROUTING. BECAUSE I WAS TRYING TO TALK AND LISTEN AT THE SAME TIME I HEARD WHAT I WANTED AND EXPECTED TO HEAR AND NOT WHAT THE TWR TOLD US. AT A CRITICAL PHASE OF FLT, I WAS TALKING WHEN I SHOULD HAVE BEEN LISTENING.
