Narrative:

We were cleared direct to ptw VOR, then J-48. Passing ptw, I allowed myself to be distracted by cockpit conversation and failed to make the turn to track outbound on J-48. ZNY gave a turn to 270 degrees for traffic separation. This type of error can only be avoided by maintaining uninterrupted situational awareness and avoiding unnecessary distrs.

Narrative: WE WERE CLRED DIRECT TO PTW VOR, THEN J-48. PASSING PTW, I ALLOWED MYSELF TO BE DISTRACTED BY COCKPIT CONVERSATION AND FAILED TO MAKE THE TURN TO TRACK OUTBOUND ON J-48. ZNY GAVE A TURN TO 270 DEGS FOR TFC SEPARATION. THIS TYPE OF ERROR CAN ONLY BE AVOIDED BY MAINTAINING UNINTERRUPTED SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AND AVOIDING UNNECESSARY DISTRS.
