Narrative:

Near midair collision. While flying runway heading, climbing to 7000 ft, rdu departure control assigned us a heading of 320 degrees to join the packk 4 SID. This resulted in an RA with a cessna 177 at 3500 ft. This aircraft was in radar contact with rdu departure. The RA happened at the same time ATC advised us of the traffic. We never had visual contact with the traffic. Vertical separation was less than 100 ft. Horizontal separation as shown on TCASII was on top of the aircraft symbol display of the CRT.
