Narrative:

80 mi southeast of iiu at FL350, heading 270 degrees. TCASII screen indicates traffic at 12 O'clock at our altitude, 40 mi and closing. I call center to inquire about traffic. Center states he has traffic at 1:30 - 2 O'clock but nothing at 12 O'clock. I call center again at 20 mi about traffic. He then repeats he has nothing at 12 O'clock at 15 mi, I request turn in lieu of impending RA/TA. He gives an affirm to turn. I turn right as the other airplane begins to turn left. He then begins to descend. He passes at our 12:30 O'clock, 8 NM, 500 ft below. Controller requests a synopsis of what just occurred. I notify him I will call ZID upon reaching ord. I call and speak to supervisor on duty about what had just transpired. He thought impending safety breech was not a concern, stated airplane was to pass behind me by 10 mi. We both agreed to file.
