Narrative:

I filed an IFR flight plan from deer valley airport to wichita falls, direct. While taxiing and receiving the clearance, I was asked to name an intermediate fix, and I selected rosewell VOR. After several mins, I received the clearance, departed, and was handed off to ATC. Shortly after the handoff, I experienced engine problems, and informed ATC that I would be returning to deer valley immediately. I landed without incident. We found a stuck valve. I called to insure that the flight plan had been canceled, and asked for the same flight plan for the next day. Repairs were completed the next morning. I mentioned the need for an intermediate fix to the briefer. He said that they filed direct all the time. I started taxiing, and ground control again said 'clearance upon request.' he once again asked for an intermediate fix. I requested onm VOR, which would keep me north of the restr area R5107. He asked me to stand by, and I asked him if I could pick up the clearance in the air. He said ok, and I departed at noon, turning toward the mountains to the east and climbing at a normal rate. My concentration at this time was on the engine instruments and engine operation. I did not receive the expected handoff to ATC, and asked the tower why. He asked if I was the bonanza waiting for a clearance, I said I was, he said that the shift had just changed in the tower, and handed me off to ATC, who immediately informed me that I was in the class B airspace without a clearance. I said that I had been waiting for it from deer valley. They did not know where my clearance was, but were quite sure that I did not have it. I was issued a squawk code, and continued the eastbound climb. I soon received 'radar service terminated,' etc. I said that I was on an IFR flight plan, waiting on further clearance. He handed me off. Several mins later the same thing happened. I again said that I was on an IFR flight plan, waiting on further clearance. I received the further clearance 30 mins into the flight. I departed expecting the clearance to be forthcoming. My attention was focused too much on engine operation, and not enough on airspace. I did not consider that my aircraft, departing dvt on time and climbing eastbound on an IFR flight plan, would illegally climb into the phoenix class B airspace without a clearance. I was wrong. At no time was I in instrument conditions. The only traffic was a sbound jet well above and east of me, and a low wing single engine crossing well below me. It won't happen again.

Title: SMA DEPARTS VFR. WHILE TRYING TO ACQUIRE IFR CLRNC ENTERS CLASS B AIRSPACE.

Narrative: I FILED AN IFR FLT PLAN FROM DEER VALLEY ARPT TO WICHITA FALLS, DIRECT. WHILE TAXIING AND RECEIVING THE CLRNC, I WAS ASKED TO NAME AN INTERMEDIATE FIX, AND I SELECTED ROSEWELL VOR. AFTER SEVERAL MINS, I RECEIVED THE CLRNC, DEPARTED, AND WAS HANDED OFF TO ATC. SHORTLY AFTER THE HDOF, I EXPERIENCED ENG PROBS, AND INFORMED ATC THAT I WOULD BE RETURNING TO DEER VALLEY IMMEDIATELY. I LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. WE FOUND A STUCK VALVE. I CALLED TO INSURE THAT THE FLT PLAN HAD BEEN CANCELED, AND ASKED FOR THE SAME FLT PLAN FOR THE NEXT DAY. REPAIRS WERE COMPLETED THE NEXT MORNING. I MENTIONED THE NEED FOR AN INTERMEDIATE FIX TO THE BRIEFER. HE SAID THAT THEY FILED DIRECT ALL THE TIME. I STARTED TAXIING, AND GND CTL AGAIN SAID 'CLRNC UPON REQUEST.' HE ONCE AGAIN ASKED FOR AN INTERMEDIATE FIX. I REQUESTED ONM VOR, WHICH WOULD KEEP ME N OF THE RESTR AREA R5107. HE ASKED ME TO STAND BY, AND I ASKED HIM IF I COULD PICK UP THE CLRNC IN THE AIR. HE SAID OK, AND I DEPARTED AT NOON, TURNING TOWARD THE MOUNTAINS TO THE E AND CLBING AT A NORMAL RATE. MY CONCENTRATION AT THIS TIME WAS ON THE ENG INSTS AND ENG OP. I DID NOT RECEIVE THE EXPECTED HDOF TO ATC, AND ASKED THE TWR WHY. HE ASKED IF I WAS THE BONANZA WAITING FOR A CLRNC, I SAID I WAS, HE SAID THAT THE SHIFT HAD JUST CHANGED IN THE TWR, AND HANDED ME OFF TO ATC, WHO IMMEDIATELY INFORMED ME THAT I WAS IN THE CLASS B AIRSPACE WITHOUT A CLRNC. I SAID THAT I HAD BEEN WAITING FOR IT FROM DEER VALLEY. THEY DID NOT KNOW WHERE MY CLRNC WAS, BUT WERE QUITE SURE THAT I DID NOT HAVE IT. I WAS ISSUED A SQUAWK CODE, AND CONTINUED THE EBOUND CLB. I SOON RECEIVED 'RADAR SVC TERMINATED,' ETC. I SAID THAT I WAS ON AN IFR FLT PLAN, WAITING ON FURTHER CLRNC. HE HANDED ME OFF. SEVERAL MINS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED. I AGAIN SAID THAT I WAS ON AN IFR FLT PLAN, WAITING ON FURTHER CLRNC. I RECEIVED THE FURTHER CLRNC 30 MINS INTO THE FLT. I DEPARTED EXPECTING THE CLRNC TO BE FORTHCOMING. MY ATTN WAS FOCUSED TOO MUCH ON ENG OP, AND NOT ENOUGH ON AIRSPACE. I DID NOT CONSIDER THAT MY ACFT, DEPARTING DVT ON TIME AND CLBING EBOUND ON AN IFR FLT PLAN, WOULD ILLEGALLY CLB INTO THE PHOENIX CLASS B AIRSPACE WITHOUT A CLRNC. I WAS WRONG. AT NO TIME WAS I IN INST CONDITIONS. THE ONLY TFC WAS A SBOUND JET WELL ABOVE AND E OF ME, AND A LOW WING SINGLE ENG XING WELL BELOW ME. IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN.
