Narrative:

During descent towards scy VOR ZFW gave us several heading changes, and several step down altitudes. We were never advised of conflicting traffic, nor did I see any on TCASII. In the meantime I asked the first officer to contact company and give an 'in range call' and talk to maintenance about a problem we had. We were cleared to 13000 ft and I descended to 12600 ft. I was concerned about making a 7000 ft crossing restr, 6 mi northwest of scy VOR. We had just swapped airplanes, after flying a B737/300 with automatic level off to a B737/200 without automatic leveloff. The first officer was distracted by the company radio. ZFW seemed confused giving several level off altitudes and heading changes.
