Narrative:

After departing runway 25R las we climbed to FL290. ATC then informed us that tire debris was discovered on the runway and it might be from any aircraft that recently departed. We checked with las maintenance and determined it was the same type tire we use. As a precaution, we had emergency equipment standing by for our landing in dtw. Approach was uneventful except for a minor leading edge flap problem which was quickly corrected using cockpit operation manual procedure. Landing was uneventful and crash fire rescue equipment personnel inspected tires after we cleared runway 03R in dtw. They informed us of damage to #4 main tire. We requested our company maintenance to inspect damage before proceeding further. Company maintenance came out to taxiway to inspect and cleared us to taxi to gate. Upon arrival at gate, we observed damage to gear door, trailing edge flap, spoiler, and #3 engine cowl. Taxied with flaps extended to prevent further damage and informed ground control. Released aircraft to maintenance at gate. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the captain said that the tire cap, only, separated and the tire remained inflated throughout the incident. There was extensive damage to the B727-200, however. The captain complemented the flight crew for their performance and for their use of good cockpit resource management.
