Narrative:

I am a cfii who was asked to fly with a private pilot who had just gone through the majority of 1 of those PIC 10-day IFR courses. He said he had 1 more day of flying with PIC to finish the course and get his rating, but as he could not finish the course until may, he asked if I would fly some approachs with him to keep him in practice. I filed IFR to do multiple approachs at morgantown. From the outset, the student appeared unsure and unprepared. We did the VOR-a approach first, and were given missed approach instructions to head 330 degrees, climb and maintain 3000 ft. After a thoroughly awful VOR approach, I had to talk to mgw tower to tell them we had missed while my student proceeded to give the mooney full throttle and clean it up. Before I realized what he'd done, we had gone from the MDA of 2600 ft to 3500 ft, right through our assigned altitude. I stopped him, took control of the airplane, got us back to altitude and tried to let him regroup. The rest of the ride went rather poorly and I ended the lesson soon after. We were also well left of course on our practice ILS approach. All for taking a student's word on his level of proficiency and filing a flight plan under my name without being sure of his abilities and my ability to control his mistakes in a timely fashion. My unfamiliarity with his mooney (after spending most of my time in C-172S) also probably contributed. In the future, I will be more in control of my students and preflight them and their capabilities before filing flight plans with them flying!

Narrative: I AM A CFII WHO WAS ASKED TO FLY WITH A PVT PLT WHO HAD JUST GONE THROUGH THE MAJORITY OF 1 OF THOSE PIC 10-DAY IFR COURSES. MY UNFAMILIARITY WITH HIS MOONEY (AFTER SPENDING MOST OF MY TIME IN C-172S) ALSO PROBABLY CONTRIBUTED. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL BE MORE IN CTL OF MY STUDENTS AND PREFLT THEM AND THEIR CAPABILITIES BEFORE FILING FLT PLANS WITH THEM FLYING!
