Narrative:

Copilot hand flying to maintain flying skills. Leveled at 10000 ft MSL and began accelerating from 250 KTS to cruise speed. Departure gave us a 50 degree left turn to intercept the outbound radial. As the aircraft accelerated, we hit turbulence and climbed above 10000 ft. I informed the copilot to maintenance 10000 ft. He applied corrective action, but we climbed to 10500 ft before correcting to 10000 ft. Controller was very busy and didn't mention our altitude excursion. Shortly thereafter, we were cleared to climb to 17000 ft. This wouldn't have happened with autoplt engaged.
