Narrative:

Both the captain and first officer each thought the other had obtained the clearance via pre departure clearance. The ACARS screen was checked and the proper transponder code was set, but both pilots failed to realize that that clearance was for the previous leg. The aircraft departed (no questions asked by ground or tower), and after switching to departure control, a new squawk was issued (and set), when both captain and first officer realized the oversight. 1) ground control, or tower should have verified we received our clearance (how did they get our strip?). 2) we should set 0000 in the transponder at the completion of each leg, to remind us to get new clearance, and set new transponder code.
