Narrative:

Climbing through 12000 ft I selected maximum control on trust- rating panel to speed the climb through chop. Seconds later we got an engine #2 vibration high EICAS message. Engine 2 N2 vibration indicated top of scale with vibration apparent in the seat. We selected alternate per checklist with no change then retarded the throttle. Up to this time all other engine indications were well within normal. Vibration decreased with reduced throttle. Returned to dfw with dispatch and tul technician concurrence. Landing at dfw was overweight gross weight 89.7 pounds touchdown less than 100 FPM smooth. Emergency was declared for return -- engine was left at idle but ran normally until touchdown.

UP TO THIS TIME ALL OTHER ENG INDICATIONS WERE WELL WITHIN NORMAL. VIBRATION DECREASED WITH REDUCED THROTTLE. RETURNED TO DFW WITH DISPATCH AND TUL TECHNICIAN CONCURRENCE. LNDG AT DFW WAS OVERWT GROSS WT 89.7 LBS TOUCHDOWN LESS THAN 100 FPM SMOOTH. EMER WAS DECLARED FOR RETURN -- ENG WAS LEFT AT IDLE BUT RAN NORMALLY UNTIL TOUCHDOWN.
