Narrative:

Air carrier X (B-757) slc-sna. Socal approach issued left turn to 270 degrees and descent to 3000 ft. Passing approximately 4000 ft approach issued right turn to 330 degrees 'for traffic avoidance.' within seconds a TCASII RA occurred directing a climb requiring a 2000-2500 FPM rate. Approach control was immediately advised of TCASII evasive maneuver by PNF (captain) as the maneuver was in progress. Traffic was never visually sighted. Recovery from the 'clear of conflict' message was accomplished at about 6000 ft. Socal approach issued instructions for an intercept vector to ILS runway 19R at sna. Normal approach and landing were accomplished. It was my impression that due to controller error we were vectored into the path of known IFR traffic. TCASII answered to break the chain of events which would have otherwise ended in disaster.
