Narrative:

Captain was flying aircraft on the walet 7 arrival into memphis. Both pilots missed the instructions to turn left at 8 DME to a 355 degree heading. At 5 DME, the controller inquired as to our heading. When we replied that it was 045 degree, he asked if we had been cleared via the walet 7. After we replied that we had, he pointed out to us the directions to turn left to 355 degree at 8 DME. Lesson learned: read and brief the arrival and approach more thoroughly.
