Narrative:

On descent while flying struck 8 arrival into hou during a right turn to 220 degrees and using digital flight guidance system #1. The autoplt failed to level off at 6000 ft MSL. I was flying as first officer and made a standard call descending through 7000 ft MSL. Both fmas annunciated -- altitude cap -- but the aircraft descended through the altitude. At about the same time that I called out the situation, captain also noted the deviation and disconnected the autoplt and autothrottle. Descent was stopped at about 5750 ft MSL, and hand flown back up to 6000 ft. An FAA air carrier inspector witnessed the event from the cockpit jumpseat.
