In cruise at 8000 ft after departure from elkins, wv. Forecast was for ice in clouds and precipitation from freezing level to 18000 ft. Freezing level at elkins was 8000 ft and slowly rising to destination, columbia, sc. North of charlotte directed climb to 10000 ft. Immediately encountered clear ice. Requested return to 8000 ft, and suggested east or west course to circle class B airspace. Charlotte gave 8000 ft on airway. Ice came off at 9000 ft, continued flight at 8000 ft, no further problem. Should have checked 10000 ft or questioned possibility of ice where freezing level unclr. Aircraft was mooney 201, no deice.
