Narrative:
Ny approach/center cleared us to what we thought was 7000 ft. The first officer set it in the altitude alerter and I confirmed 7000 ft MSL. As ny was giving us boston's frequency he frantically asked us what our altitude was and told us to get down to 5000 ft immediately which we did. I'm not sure if our original clearance was to 5000 ft or 7000 ft, but it was clear that 7000 ft was not were ny wanted us.

Narrative: NY APCH/CTR CLRED US TO WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS 7000 FT. THE FO SET IT IN THE ALT ALERTER AND I CONFIRMED 7000 FT MSL. AS NY WAS GIVING US BOSTON'S FREQ HE FRANTICALLY ASKED US WHAT OUR ALT WAS AND TOLD US TO GET DOWN TO 5000 FT IMMEDIATELY WHICH WE DID. I'M NOT SURE IF OUR ORIGINAL CLRNC WAS TO 5000 FT OR 7000 FT, BUT IT WAS CLR THAT 7000 FT WAS NOT WERE NY WANTED US.
