Narrative:

The fleet mgrs office has apparently idented a problem with the amu (audio management units) in our fleet of A-320. Though they are not replacing the, but asking for myself and other crew members to continue experiencing the sharp spiking piercing noise after starting #1 engine. First, rather than replace the units in the specific aircraft I earlier idented in my letter to them. They are asking myself and others to continue to expose ourselves to further ear damage and hearing loss because of a statement in our A-320 fcom volume 3 normal procedures page 03.01.97 requiring boom microphone headsets below FL180 including ground use, at the cost of my FAA physical for hearing loss. They won't allow first officer's to make logbook entries and ask that when encountered, write it up. We have capts that continue to pass verbal problems to maintenance and my hearing suffers because for some unknown reason that they never got changed. The problem is being experienced by many A-320 first officer's -- this problem may be attributed to the frequency interference near the las antenna sight mid-field that has several frequency overlapping with ground control and tower while taxiing. This same problem has surfaced when landing now in phx on only the runway 26L and runway 8R and during taxi on that side of field and while entering the central taxiway near a maintenance hangar. The radio problem on frequency 135.97 in ZAU that they report is associated with A-320 aircraft #1 radio as idented by them as a normal occurrence on that frequency as I reported in my report to you in sep/xx/94.

Title: RPTR STATES PIERCING NOISE IN AUDIO FO HEADSET.

Narrative: THE FLEET MGRS OFFICE HAS APPARENTLY IDENTED A PROB WITH THE AMU (AUDIO MGMNT UNITS) IN OUR FLEET OF A-320. THOUGH THEY ARE NOT REPLACING THE, BUT ASKING FOR MYSELF AND OTHER CREW MEMBERS TO CONTINUE EXPERIENCING THE SHARP SPIKING PIERCING NOISE AFTER STARTING #1 ENG. FIRST, RATHER THAN REPLACE THE UNITS IN THE SPECIFIC ACFT I EARLIER IDENTED IN MY LETTER TO THEM. THEY ARE ASKING MYSELF AND OTHERS TO CONTINUE TO EXPOSE OURSELVES TO FURTHER EAR DAMAGE AND HEARING LOSS BECAUSE OF A STATEMENT IN OUR A-320 FCOM VOLUME 3 NORMAL PROCS PAGE 03.01.97 REQUIRING BOOM MIKE HEADSETS BELOW FL180 INCLUDING GND USE, AT THE COST OF MY FAA PHYSICAL FOR HEARING LOSS. THEY WON'T ALLOW FO'S TO MAKE LOGBOOK ENTRIES AND ASK THAT WHEN ENCOUNTERED, WRITE IT UP. WE HAVE CAPTS THAT CONTINUE TO PASS VERBAL PROBS TO MAINT AND MY HEARING SUFFERS BECAUSE FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON THAT THEY NEVER GOT CHANGED. THE PROB IS BEING EXPERIENCED BY MANY A-320 FO'S -- THIS PROB MAY BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE FREQ INTERFERENCE NEAR THE LAS ANTENNA SIGHT MID-FIELD THAT HAS SEVERAL FREQ OVERLAPPING WITH GND CTL AND TWR WHILE TAXIING. THIS SAME PROB HAS SURFACED WHEN LNDG NOW IN PHX ON ONLY THE RWY 26L AND RWY 8R AND DURING TAXI ON THAT SIDE OF FIELD AND WHILE ENTERING THE CENTRAL TXWY NEAR A MAINT HANGAR. THE RADIO PROB ON FREQ 135.97 IN ZAU THAT THEY RPT IS ASSOCIATED WITH A-320 ACFT #1 RADIO AS IDENTED BY THEM AS A NORMAL OCCURRENCE ON THAT FREQ AS I RPTED IN MY RPT TO YOU IN SEP/XX/94.
