Narrative:

While receiving flight following from atl approach and being advised to stay clear of class B airspace, I advised the controller I was at 2200 ft MSL outside the perimeter of the class B boundary and below a shelf. While navigating referencing a sectional and a class D chart, I descended to 2000 ft as a precautionary measure due to my close proximity to a 2100 ft boundary. While maintaining outside a 2100 ft boundary and below a 2500 ft shelf I received a heading assignment of 180 degree which would keep me in his (controller) airspace as he noted. My concern was he may have assumed I was encroaching on the class B boundary. No other mention by the controller. This is a precautionary notice only.
