Narrative:

In cruise from tki to ads, engine failed. Performed emergency restart procedures (no restart). Called 'mayday, mayday, nxxxx engine failure, going down' to addison tower. Picked best suitable field for emergency landing. Attempted restart again and determined engine would not start. Secured airplane for emergency landing. Touched down in field, held nose off as long as possible. When nosewheel dug into the rain-softened field, it broke off and aircraft flipped over. Immediately evacuate/evacuationed aircraft. No injuries. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter was flying a cessna 172RG with an O-320 engine. A pin in the accessory gear drive sheared disabling both magnetos and the valve train. The engine windmilled throughout the emergency. There was minimal damage to the aircraft in addition to the nose gear. The reporter is concerned about a counterfeit part having been put into this engine. It has not been determined if this was the case here.
