Narrative:

Normal preflight. No maintenance carryovers (previous maintenance carryover ahars 2 in basic mode removed that day). Normal taxi single engine plus APU. 25 min taxi delay due to departure traffic. Position and hold runway 31L (jfk) when cleared for takeoff, engine runup normal and stable clamp 60 KTS. Approximately 11000 ft remaining on runway 31L after a bump or groove in runway at approximately 110 KTS. Both ahars failed. I elected to abort. Both engines worked normally in reverse and maximum braking was overridden due to more than sufficient runway remaining. Tower was notified of abort, no emergency equipment requested. Also, a PA by first officer was made informing passenger to remain seated. Post landing checklist was completed. Captain requested a return to gate. Brake temperature maximum 170 degrees. No passenger or flight attendant injuries. Note: maintenance realigned ahars both checked normal. Change #1 ahars. On subsequent takeoff following bump #2 ahars failed #1 ahars did not. Takeoff continued uneventful. #2 ahars realigned in flight. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter was flying an md-88 on takeoff on runway 31L at jfk. This runway intersects runway 22. At this intersection there is quite a bump and when the aircraft struck this bump both of the attitude, heading, and reference system failed. The captain rejected the takeoff and returned to the gate. The reject occurred at 100 KTS and the captain shut off the rejected takeoff system and let the aircraft rollout to avoid overheating the brakes. After the maintenance technician inspected and realigned the ahars, the flight crew again took off. This time only the #2, or first officer's, failed, so they continued the takeoff and used the att position to realign the #2 system throughout the remainder of the flight. The reporter said that the 'bump problem' has been a constant one with this type of navigation presentation system since delivery.

CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR WAS FLYING AN MD-88 ON TKOF ON RWY 31L AT JFK. THIS RWY INTERSECTS RWY 22. AT THIS INTXN THERE IS QUITE A BUMP AND WHEN THE ACFT STRUCK THIS BUMP BOTH OF THE ATTITUDE, HDG, AND REF SYS FAILED. THE CAPT REJECTED THE TKOF AND RETURNED TO THE GATE. THE REJECT OCCURRED AT 100 KTS AND THE CAPT SHUT OFF THE REJECTED TKOF SYS AND LET THE ACFT ROLLOUT TO AVOID OVERHEATING THE BRAKES. AFTER THE MAINT TECHNICIAN INSPECTED AND REALIGNED THE AHARS, THE FLC AGAIN TOOK OFF. THIS TIME ONLY THE #2, OR FO'S, FAILED, SO THEY CONTINUED THE TKOF AND USED THE ATT POS TO REALIGN THE #2 SYS THROUGHOUT THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT. THE RPTR SAID THAT THE 'BUMP PROB' HAS BEEN A CONSTANT ONE WITH THIS TYPE OF NAV PRESENTATION SYS SINCE DELIVERY.
