Narrative:

I was inbound on the VOR 3 approach at pgd. I broke out in the clear and had an unobstructed view of the airport and canceled IFR after leveling off at the MDA. About 2-3 mi from the field, a cloud moved in and the field went IFR. I contacted approach and started my climb to 1500 ft to the VOR and declared a missed approach. I requested the VOR 21 approach (lower minimums) and was cleared to the VOR maintain 1500 ft and cleared for the full VOR runway 21 approach. In the excitement of the unexpected miss, I flew the reciprocal on the procedure turn outbound for a short time, then realizing my error, turned back to the VOR (still at 1500 ft) and completed the published procedure turn and approach without incident. At the time of this incident, I was in VFR conditions on top with clear forward visibility in all directions. I learned: check and rechk the outbound heading of a procedure turn. A missed approach can occur after you report the airport and cancel IFR.

Narrative: I WAS INBOUND ON THE VOR 3 APCH AT PGD. I BROKE OUT IN THE CLR AND HAD AN UNOBSTRUCTED VIEW OF THE ARPT AND CANCELED IFR AFTER LEVELING OFF AT THE MDA. ABOUT 2-3 MI FROM THE FIELD, A CLOUD MOVED IN AND THE FIELD WENT IFR. I CONTACTED APCH AND STARTED MY CLB TO 1500 FT TO THE VOR AND DECLARED A MISSED APCH. I REQUESTED THE VOR 21 APCH (LOWER MINIMUMS) AND WAS CLRED TO THE VOR MAINTAIN 1500 FT AND CLRED FOR THE FULL VOR RWY 21 APCH. IN THE EXCITEMENT OF THE UNEXPECTED MISS, I FLEW THE RECIPROCAL ON THE PROC TURN OUTBOUND FOR A SHORT TIME, THEN REALIZING MY ERROR, TURNED BACK TO THE VOR (STILL AT 1500 FT) AND COMPLETED THE PUBLISHED PROC TURN AND APCH WITHOUT INCIDENT. AT THE TIME OF THIS INCIDENT, I WAS IN VFR CONDITIONS ON TOP WITH CLR FORWARD VISIBILITY IN ALL DIRECTIONS. I LEARNED: CHK AND RECHK THE OUTBOUND HDG OF A PROC TURN. A MISSED APCH CAN OCCUR AFTER YOU RPT THE ARPT AND CANCEL IFR.
