Narrative:

Following a tough-and-go on runway 24L at day, my student and I were instructed to make left traffic for runway 24L and the local controller requested that we report a left base. I received and read back his request. The lesson plan for this day called for us to practice a simulated forced landing following a simulated engine failure. When across from the touchdown point, I reduced the student's power to idle and we began to set up our approach with me leading the procedural discussion. I had forgotten to call tower on our base, and tower eventually called to clear us for landing as we rolled out on final. As far as I know, there was no traffic conflict, and the controller did not mention our failure to report. I, however, did apologize for the oversight. In the future, I will strive to practice what I so often preach to my students about efficiently dividing their attention among whatever tasks are at hand. I had fixated on the discussion of emergency procedures and failed to pay sufficient attention to positional awareness and making the proper radio call.

Title: SMA NON ADHERENCE TO ATC INSTRUCTION FAILED TO RPT BASE LEG.

Narrative: FOLLOWING A TOUGH-AND-GO ON RWY 24L AT DAY, MY STUDENT AND I WERE INSTRUCTED TO MAKE L TFC FOR RWY 24L AND THE LCL CTLR REQUESTED THAT WE RPT A L BASE. I RECEIVED AND READ BACK HIS REQUEST. THE LESSON PLAN FOR THIS DAY CALLED FOR US TO PRACTICE A SIMULATED FORCED LNDG FOLLOWING A SIMULATED ENG FAILURE. WHEN ACROSS FROM THE TOUCHDOWN POINT, I REDUCED THE STUDENT'S PWR TO IDLE AND WE BEGAN TO SET UP OUR APCH WITH ME LEADING THE PROCEDURAL DISCUSSION. I HAD FORGOTTEN TO CALL TWR ON OUR BASE, AND TWR EVENTUALLY CALLED TO CLR US FOR LNDG AS WE ROLLED OUT ON FINAL. AS FAR AS I KNOW, THERE WAS NO TFC CONFLICT, AND THE CTLR DID NOT MENTION OUR FAILURE TO RPT. I, HOWEVER, DID APOLOGIZE FOR THE OVERSIGHT. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL STRIVE TO PRACTICE WHAT I SO OFTEN PREACH TO MY STUDENTS ABOUT EFFICIENTLY DIVIDING THEIR ATTN AMONG WHATEVER TASKS ARE AT HAND. I HAD FIXATED ON THE DISCUSSION OF EMER PROCS AND FAILED TO PAY SUFFICIENT ATTN TO POSITIONAL AWARENESS AND MAKING THE PROPER RADIO CALL.
