Narrative:

After given a direct huo VOR clearance, we were proceeding south of huo VOR approximately 6-7 mi when ATC inquired as to our routing cleared and whether the last controller gave us our present heading. Our response was that we were last cleared direct to huo VOR. The controller then gave us a turn from our present heading of south to a 240 degree heading which was basically direct coate intersection and then we were given a heading out of coate, vectors to ewr airport. Prior to this inquiry, we had just completed a steep descent to satisfy a crossing restriction north of huo and were experiencing occasional moderate turbulence at 6000 ft. In retrospect, neither the first officer nor I could recall the pieces as to the why or how the situation if any occurred.
