Narrative:

Air carrier flight xx (similar sounding a/north) ewr-mdw. While climbing to assigned altitude of 16000 ft I experienced a near miss appearing to be within 500 ft with air carrier B flight ghxx (similar sounding a/north) at 14000 ft. I executed hard maneuvering to avoid collision. ATC issued instruction for me to turn to avoid after I had passed air carrier B on his left side. Controller error in my clearance to climb through air carrier B flight path. TCASII saved the day on this one.
