Narrative:

A lot of confusion during initial contact with ground control! I was getting some actual (IMC) time toward my instrument rating. A trip arose to clt, so I went along. Some guy who was performing the maintenance was very rude, and to the best of my knowledge didn't complete the work in our time frame, as he stated he would! I was having snacks, then I returned to find the aircraft outside the hangar, so I preflted it and we contacted ground control...I was listening to the conversation, when all the confusion began, something about the aircraft being unairworthy, when we then stated our only problem was an inoperative encoder, so they said, 'taxi runway 18R...' our transponder was operative! We were cleared for takeoff and returned to gmu, sc,...(the maintenance guy was really rude about something unknown to me), so I felt we should file this so no stories are told against us!
