Narrative:

Recently GPS panel mount in aircraft. Should add check GPS 'to' before takeoff checklist. Had another person pilot qualified in cockpit, should have briefed him to check course. We recently had a GPS installed in our aircraft. I forgot to turn it on before flight. After reaching cruise altitude of 2700 ft I turned on the GPS. I was setting the destination airport in the GPS, occasionally looking outside for other aircraft then going back to the GPS my partner just then asked 'where are we?' as we were passing the airport. We expeditiously exited springfield's airspace and proceeded to our destination, madison, county, where we landed and refueled. Before we left madison county, the line person said that springfield tower had called and I should contact them, which I did. I recognize that I used poor judgement in not being more observant as to where I was, what my heading and course was and by not using the other person in a more useful manner.

Narrative: RECENTLY GPS PANEL MOUNT IN ACFT. SHOULD ADD CHK GPS 'TO' BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST. HAD ANOTHER PERSON PLT QUALIFIED IN COCKPIT, SHOULD HAVE BRIEFED HIM TO CHK COURSE. WE RECENTLY HAD A GPS INSTALLED IN OUR ACFT. I FORGOT TO TURN IT ON BEFORE FLT. AFTER REACHING CRUISE ALT OF 2700 FT I TURNED ON THE GPS. I WAS SETTING THE DEST ARPT IN THE GPS, OCCASIONALLY LOOKING OUTSIDE FOR OTHER ACFT THEN GOING BACK TO THE GPS MY PARTNER JUST THEN ASKED 'WHERE ARE WE?' AS WE WERE PASSING THE ARPT. WE EXPEDITIOUSLY EXITED SPRINGFIELD'S AIRSPACE AND PROCEEDED TO OUR DEST, MADISON, COUNTY, WHERE WE LANDED AND REFUELED. BEFORE WE LEFT MADISON COUNTY, THE LINE PERSON SAID THAT SPRINGFIELD TWR HAD CALLED AND I SHOULD CONTACT THEM, WHICH I DID. I RECOGNIZE THAT I USED POOR JUDGEMENT IN NOT BEING MORE OBSERVANT AS TO WHERE I WAS, WHAT MY HDG AND COURSE WAS AND BY NOT USING THE OTHER PERSON IN A MORE USEFUL MANNER.
